Galway Yoga Centre - Courses and More

Introduction

Satyananda Yoga courses on offer at the Galway Yoga Centre are true yoga retreats for anyone interested in experiencing yoga at a pure and traditional level. They are not for those who sole desire is to attain ‘the body beautiful’ but rather they aim to uncover the true potential that we all have within.

The conditions at the centre have been carefully created so that the environment is similar to an ashram. Accommodation is full board and generally communal. Single accommodation can be provided nearby at an extra cost, where required. Space is available to pitch your tent if you prefer. Your car and phone are left unused for the duration of each course, so there are no disturbances to your practice. Consider the course as time devoted to yourself! A special time to reflect, rest and rejuvenate on every level.

The diet is vegetarian and organic where possible. Neither caffeine nor sugar is available at the centre as both substances can create disturbances in the energy of the body and mind making it very

difficult to focus on yoga and meditation. Prior to coming on a course, it is advisable to begin to reduce your intake of both. You are requested not to bring your own food or drink, but rather to accept this opportunity to experience a simple yogic diet. The yogic diet helps to bring balance and harmony to mind and body, reduces cravings, and helps the practitioner to have a deep and rejuvenating sleep each night.

Courses are tailored to suit every level. The program of courses offers a continuation from weekly classes up to the 10 day course, designed so that you can continually expand and enrich your experience of yoga. Within a course, each class progresses from the previous one, therefore you are requested to attend all classes within a course if possible, to achieve the full benefit of yoga.

Chakra Weekend

Chakras are energy centres in the body that influence our lives on a daily basis. It is important for health and well-being that we have an awareness of the chakras

This weekend is about getting to know the chakras, how they work and influence us.

This can help us to become more aware of how we function, and will enable us to use this for our daily yoga practice and our lives in general.

Food is wholesome and vegetarian, and you are asked to attend all yoga sessions. Really take this opportunity to switch off from the business of everyday life and have some time for reflection and rest.

Cost: €175. Deposit: €100.

Day of Yoga

Come and enjoy a day of refreshing and relaxing yoga. We start with a 2-hour session of yoga postures and breathing. After a vegetarian lunch, we then go for a walk in the countryside followed by Yoga Nidra. Yoga Nidra is a systematic method of experiencing all the layers of our being. The day ends with a meditation class (outside, weather permitting). Includes lunch. All welcome (no experience required).

Cost: €50.

5 Day Summer Course

This is a course of traditional Satyananda Yoga practices for people who want to expand and deepen their experience of Yoga. We welcome both novice & experienced students. The course is 5 days of integrated Postures, Breathing, Chakra work, Meditation & Deep Relaxation.

Different yogic practices like Karma Yoga (practical yoga), Mouna (silence), Kirtan (chanting) and a variety of shatkarmas (cleansing practices) are experienced. Each course has a particular theme which

can change from year to year e.g. Tattwas, Koshas, Yoga as a way of living, Prana, Meditation etc.

The food is vegetarian (organic when possible) and accommodation is shared (you may bring a tent if you prefer).

Cost: €300. Deposit: €150. This covers tuition, food and accommodation.

10 Day Sadhana Course

Sadhana is one’s personal yoga practice. This course will show you how to deepen your yoga practice, and to allow yoga to become a way of life. It is suitable for people who have a knowledge of yoga and want to incorporate it into their everyday lives.

It starts with an intestinal cleansing practice called Shankaprakshalana, and other cleansing practices are also practiced daily. A very simple, cleansing vegetarian diet will be followed for the 10 days. Days consist of postures, breathwork, work on the chakras, meditations, Yoga Nidra and Karma Yoga (Practical task done as a mindfulness practice). Mouna (silence) is an important part of the Sadhana course and 3 days of Mouna are observed during the 10 days. Some people choose to be silent for much longer (the external silence usually leads to internal calm and stillness).

There is free time in the afternoon to go for a walk, read, rest or sit in the garden.

This is a true retreat – mobile phones, computers and cars are not used for the duration of the 10 days. This is a chance to really have time out without the need to feel you have to please, help or chat to anyone. A time to truly be yourself, away from the demanding roles we play in everyday life. A time to learn to live in the moment.

If someone needs to contact you in an emergency they can phone the centre’s land line. Accommodation is shared (you may bring a tent if you prefer).

The cost is €550. A deposit of €200 secures a place. Book early for a reduction of €50 from course cost!

This covers tuition, food and accommodation

1 Day Cleanse - Shankaprakshalana

Shankaprashalana is a complete cleanse of the digestive system which facilitates a true detox on all levels – physical, mental and emotional. This is a demanding intestinal cleanse followed by Kunjal (stomach cleanse) and Neti (nasal cleanse). A clean, free and balanced digestive system facilitates the increase and expansion of energy in the body. The body is left feeling light and able.

Shankaprashalana should only be experienced once per year. In advance of the course a light, caffeine- free diet should be adhered to for one week. It is preferable that participants follow the day’s cleanse with a diet of pure, clean food (ideally vegetarian and sattwic) for approximately one more week or longer if possible.

It is preferable to have experienced Kunjal, Neti and/or Laghoo (a lighter version of Shankaprashalana) before this course (but not compulsory). The course runs from 8am until the cleanse is finished.

Please contact the Galway Yoga Centre with any enquiries or for

further information.
